STUPID MARIO BROTHERS CLOSED CAPTIONS

This is a passion project to create captions for Richalvarez's series Stupid Mario Brothers.

Youtube's auto-caption has come far, but really struggles with this series; either from audio quality, the fake accents, the video game terms not in its dictionary, or simply that acted dialogue is harder to parse than a video essay. Unsure! I just know Youtube's auto-captions are crap. So that's where I decided to step up.

Did I need to? Idk. Did I want to? Yeah, obviously.

HOW TO PUT THE CAPTIONS ON YOUTUBE VIDEOS:

You will need an extension. I recommend both Open Subtitles (add-on) and Substital (add-on), which are both availabile for Firefox and Chrome.

Both allow you to upload a srt file from your computer and will overlay the captions over the Youtube video. The major difference between the two is just UI, so choose which you like best.

((Open Subtitles is meant to search the site of the same name for subtitles to use, but this doesn't work with Youtube videos very well. You'll just have to upload from file.))

FIREFOX:

CHROME:

WHY ARE THE SRT FILES NAMED LIKE THAT?

"Stupid Mario Brothers - Episode 1-Yx8KDImBNgA", for example. The number/letter string is the video's unique URL on youtube, after the "watch?v=" part of the URL. This is an extra measure of making sure you have the correct subtitles for the correct video.

Also, it was what the files were named when I downloaded the episodes. Because VLC will automatically open srt files alongside videos if they share file names, I named the srt to match the video file.

HOW MUCH WILL YOU SUBTITLE?

Just Stupid Mario Brothers itself: Episodes 1-75 and the movie.

I will consider subtitling further series in the StMB catalogue after I have finished Episode 75, but make no promises.

I will NOT subtitle bloopers that are in their own videos, such as with Seasons 4 and 5. As of right now, I AM subtitling bloopers that are tacked on at the end of videos, as in Seasons 1-3. If I change my mind about this commitment, I'll let you know.

STYLE GUIDE:

Decided to use the Described and Captioned Media Program's style guide because they focus on captions that are accessible for Deaf and HoH people. I am not able to follow the style guide exactly due to Youtube's limitations, but I'm doing my best.

If it's worked for decades for fansubbers, it'll work for me.

STUPID MARIO BROTHERS WIKIA SHOUTOUT:

https://stupidmariobros.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Transcriptions

The first season was transcribed on the wiki! I have been referencing this heavily for Season 1 to cut down my workload: why retype when I can copy+paste! Good luck working out which episode is which, though. I'm not in charge of wiki's naming/sorting conventions.

The srt-style captions on the wiki were not used 1:1; wiki's did not match my style standards and were edited heavily.
